Decaf Coffee

Definition - a beverage consisting of an infusion of ground coffee beans with the caffeine removed.

Like caffeinated coffee, decaf coffee is drunk all over the world today. To make a coffee decaffeinated, the coffee beans need to go through the process of decaffeination. The coffee seeds will go through this process before roasting, when the beans are still green. The seeds can go through many different methods in order to remove the caffeine from the coffee, but all involve soaking the green beans in hot water. This process is normally carried out by the production companies of the coffee.

Swiss Water Decaffeination Method

There are different methods of decaffeination all involving hot water, soaking and all produce the same result. The most recommended and most widely used method is the "Swiss Water" process. In this natural method, which does not involve the use of chemicals, the green beans are soaked in hot water to extract caffeine and coffee solid. Once these are extracted, a carbon filtering process filters the caffeine out, whilst the coffee solids are let through. This is called green coffee extract (GCE).

Other Decaf Coffee Methods

Another widely used process involves steaming the green beans, which normally takes about 30 minutes and repeatedly rinsing the beans using ethyl acetate, which can be naturally derived from some plants and vegetables. Nevertheless ethyl acetate used in producing decaf coffee is usually synthetic due to the difficulty of deriving ir from plants and vegetables. After the rinsing, the solvent is drained and the beans are steamed for about 10 hours to ensure all ethyl acetate is removd.

Other methods of decaffeination include:

  • Triglyceride process
  • Indirect method
  • CO2 process

Most methods aim not to use chemicals in their process of decaffeination, as this will likely impair the taste in addition to possibly posing a health risk to people who might be sensitive or allergic to chemicals.

Decaf Coffee and Health Concerns

Contrary to popular belief, coffee, or maybe best put caffeine, is no longer seen as a health threat. After a 22 year study on coffee by the Harvard School of Public Health, they discovered that "the overall balance of risks and benefits [of coffee consumption] are on the side of benefits.” There have been many studies on the affects to health from coffee, and some claim the consumption of coffee can reduce the risk of being affected by:

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Gout

However, most of the benefits in coffee consumption do not actually come from the caffeine, as the positive effects of consumption are greater in those who drink decaffeinated coffee.
