Francisco Quezada Montenegro, the vibrant torchbearer of La Labor Estate's coffee legacy, proudly represents the fourth generation of Montenegros cultivating coffee.
Recently, Francisco has turned La Labor into a bustling hub for experimental processing, hosting immersive training sessions for global coffee producers since its first international Q processing course in 2020. La Labor remains a thriving educational center, nurturing coffee enthusiasts and experts.
At La Labor Estate, ripe cherries swiftly journey to the on-site wet mill, where they meet Lalcafe's Oro yeast. This meticulously crafted strain enhances their essence, championing a controlled fermentation process that elevates cup quality.
Crafted over four years, LALCAFÉ ORO™ yeast is a coffee production game-changer, flourishing in diverse climates to preserve bean individuality and accentuate fruity undertones.
Extended fermentation under Oro enriches the coffee's character, enhancing flavors—complexity, acidity, floral notes—all nurtured by time. Post-fermentation, cherries dry on raised beds, guarded by infrared thermometers, preserving Guatemala's finest harvest essence.
Guatemala's diverse terroirs yield exquisite coffees, resilient against adversity like the Coffee Leaf Rust epidemic. Cooperatives empower smallholder farmers, fostering excellence and fair prices in Guatemala's thriving coffee culture.
Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Guatemala lies smallholder farms that cultivate speciality-grade coffee beans under the embrace of perfect conditions: high altitudes soaring over 1,500 MASL, nourishing soils, and abundant sunshine.
Great coffee should be great for everyone. That's why we've made it our mission to craft exceptional coffee that values everyone it touches, from the skilled farmers who cultivate our beans to the dedicated roasters who bring out their unique flavours, and finally to the coffee enthusiasts who savour each sip.
What's more, we are committed to building a better world, with a portion of our proceeds going straight back to meet the needs of the local communities where we source our coffee.
Embark on a coffee adventure like never before – one that brings the enchanting hills of Guatemala to your cup. Embrace the extraordinary with our Specialty Grade Coffee Beans and let every morning ritual be a celebration of taste, craftsmanship, and the joy found in the perfect cup of coffee.
Moving to Direct Trade has enabled Jurang to pay farmers a premium that goes beyond Fairtrade base rates.
Direct Trade enables suppliers to cut out the middlemen by working directly with farmers. This means we can give more money back to the farmers whilst still offering great prices for our customers. The charge to become Fairtrade certified for many producers is so high that this often results in unnecessarily increased costs for the coffee to roasters and ultimately consumers, as someone within the chain must swallow the fee. Direct Trade erases this fee, resulting in better prices for consumers, yet still offering the same premiums, if not more of the cut, straight back to the farmers.
For this reason, producers are increasingly moving beyond Fairtrade to establish Direct Trade relationships with origin farms. It is therefore now widely accepted that Direct Trade results in better quality coffee due to the improved farmer interaction. The amount Fairtrade premiums pay to farmers often does not change depending on the quality of the crop. We believe farmers should be rewarded for their hard work.
We've concluded that Direct Trade is better for farmers, producers, and customers and are proud to state all of our Happy Coffee Beans are sourced ethically via Direct Trade relationships with origin farms worldwide.
We believe in a vision where the bottom line is people, not profit.
