Our Vision & Sourcing Standards

Brewing a better world

Great coffee should be great for everyone.

That's why we've made it our mission to

craft exceptional coffee that values everyone it touches,

from the skilled farmers who cultivate our beans

to the dedicated roasters who bring out their unique flavours,

and finally to the coffee enthusiasts who savour each sip.

What's more, we are committed to building a better world,

with a portion of our proceeds going straight back to meet the

needs of the local communities where we source our coffee.

Jurang Coffee Sourcing Standards

Sourcing standards overseen by Peter Nadin, Director at Jurang, in collaboration with our roaster Mark Armstrong. Article last updated: March 2026.

Our Commitment to Responsible Coffee

Great coffee should be great for everyone, and this starts with responsible sourcing.

Since 2010, Jurang has supplied more than 1,200 UK businesses with commercial coffee machines, coffee beans and related products. Throughout that time, we have aimed to source our products as ethically as possible, typically supplying Fairtrade-certified coffee, tea and hot chocolate to help ensure fairer outcomes for producers.

In 2019, when Jurang began roasting its own coffee, we moved from a purely Fairtrade model to a Direct Trade approach. We believe this allows us to build genuine relationships within the supply chain, reduce unnecessary intermediaries, and ensure that more value reaches the farmers who grow the coffee. It also enables greater transparency and helps us maintain higher standards of coffee quality.

Our guiding principle is simple: people before profit.

Jurang Roastery

Since 2019, Jurang has roasted its own coffee in collaboration with Shiloh Roasters, moving away from large wholesale (Fairtrade-certified) supply to a more controlled, small-batch approach.

Our roaster Mark has roasted coffee for over ten years, resulting in Shiloh being known as a highly regarded independent roastery known for its careful, small-batch approach.

The relationship between Jurang and Shiloh is not a typical supplier arrangement; it is a close operational partnership that allows us to be involved in every step as we maintain a high level of involvement in how our coffee is sourced, roasted and presented to our customers.

Our roaster, Mark Armstrong, effectively works as Jurang's dedicated roaster. This means we can constantly tweak and improve everything from the roast profiles we develop, to the way our coffee is packaged and presented. Jurang manages its own coffee bag designs, labels, seasonal or roaster's choice offerings, and charitable initiatives linked to our coffee sales such as our recent Toybox giving project. This collaborative approach allows us to retain full oversight of our sourcing standards and maintain flexibility to adapt our coffees to customer preferences.

Mark roasts our coffee in small batches every four to six weeks to ensure freshness and consistency. This means the coffee you receive from Jurang will never be sat on a shelf for more than two months. Mark brings more than 25 years of experience as a professional chef and over a decade of experience as a coffee roaster. His background in flavour development translates naturally into roasting, where attention to detail is critical. Working closely with Jurang, Mark develops roast profiles that bring out the distinctive characteristics of each coffee.

Quality Control

Quality control is a central part of the roasting process.

This includes evaluating green coffee samples before purchase, carrying out regular cupping sessions to assess flavour and consistency, closely monitoring roast curves and development times during roasting, and logging roast data to refine profiles over time.

Small batch roasting allows adjustments to be made quickly if a coffee behaves differently due to crop variation or moisture content, helping maintain a consistent cup profile across each batch.

Looking ahead, Jurang plans to bring coffee roasting fully in-house in early 2027 when we install our own roastery at our Leeds facility. Over 2026–27, our Head of Sales, Juan, is training in coffee roasting with Mark and through specialist roasting schools in London. This will allow Jurang to further strengthen its expertise, expand its coffee range and continue improving the quality and traceability of the coffee we supply.

Supporting Coffee Communites

At Jurang, we believe responsible sourcing goes beyond paying fair prices.

Alongside our Direct Trade relationships with origin farms, we reinvest a portion of profits from our coffee sales into projects that support coffee-growing communities and wider social initiatives such as with Agri Evolve.

By working directly with producers, we ensure farmers are paid above Fairtrade base rates, improving long-term sustainability and livelihoods. We complement this by supporting charitable organisations that deliver measurable impact on the ground.

Recent Charity Partnership: Toybox

We've recently supported Toybox, a charity working to protect and support street-connected children.

Operating across multiple countries, Toybox focuses on prevention, intervention and reintegration, partnering with local organisations to deliver targeted support. In the last year alone, their work has helped over 12,000 children, young people and families.

As part of this commitment, profits from selected products, including seasonal ranges such as our Christmas coffee and gift sets, are donated directly to support Toybox's work.

Please note: All of our coffee bags and sachets are 100% recyclable, supporting a more sustainable supply chain from farm to cup.

How We Source Our Coffee

In simple terms, our supply chain follows a transparent path:
Farm → Importer → Roastery → Jurang → You

This structure allows us to maintain traceability, maintain quality standards and ensure the people growing the coffee receive fair compensation.

Direct Trade focuses on building ongoing relationships between roasters and producers rather than relying solely on third-party certification schemes. In this model, prices and quality expectations are agreed directly between buyer and producer, creating a more transparent and collaborative supply chain.

While Fairtrade certification plays an important role in supporting farmers through minimum pricing and community premiums, many specialty coffee roasters have increasingly adopted Direct Trade models because they allow closer relationships with producers and can result in higher prices being paid for higher-quality coffee. By reducing intermediaries and negotiating directly with producers or trusted exporters, a greater proportion of the coffee's final value can reach the farmers themselves.

To support this model, Jurang works with trusted green coffee importers who specialise in ethical sourcing. Raw Material is a respected specialty importer focused on transparent supply chains and long-term relationships between producers and roasters. Sucafina is a global coffee company founded in 1977 and built on a long family trading tradition, with a mission to operate a sustainable 'farm-to-roaster' coffee supply chain supporting producers across many coffee-growing regions.

Alongside these import partners, we also develop direct producer relationships where possible. One example is our relationship with Agri Evolve in Uganda for our Jurang Single Origin Uganda coffee. Agri Evolve is a social enterprise working with coffee farmers in the Rwenzori region to improve yields, productivity and income, helping strengthen livelihoods for farming communities while improving coffee quality. The organisation works with thousands of smallholder farmers and achieved B Corp certification in 2023, reflecting its commitment to positive social impact.

Our Import Partners

One of the best examples of our Direct Trade sourcing standards and relationship is with Agri Evolve, a social enterprise working with coffee farmers in the Rwenzori Mountains region of western Uganda, an area known for high-altitude Arabica coffee.

Founded in 2015, the organisation focuses on improving coffee quality while increasing farmer incomes and long-term sustainability. Today, Agri Evolve works with a network of around 20,000 smallholder farmers, sourcing and exporting more than 3,000 tonnes of Arabica coffee annually to speciality markets worldwide.

Beyond purchasing coffee, Agri Evolve operates a vertically integrated model that includes farmer training, processing and export. The organisation runs a processing facility at Nyabirongo in the Rwenzori region, where coffee cherries are processed and prepared for export. Our roaster Mark visited Agri Evolve and this facility in 2025 to further strengthen relationships.

Field teams and agronomists work directly with farmers to improve agricultural practices, crop yields and quality standards, helping producers meet the requirements of specialty coffee markets. A key part of their work is the support and certification programmes for farmers. Through partnerships and training initiatives, more than 12,000 growers in the region have achieved Rainforest Alliance or organic certification, enabling farmers to access higher-value markets and receive quality premiums. The organisation also delivers training in sustainable farming practices and financial literacy to help farmers build more resilient businesses.

Our Uganda coffee brings a lively fruit character and gentle citrus lift to both espresso and filter blends, shaped by the conditions of the Rwenzori Mountains and the care taken at every stage of production. Farmers like Andrew play a hands-on role in that quality: after harvesting ripe cherries, he fully washes the coffee, carefully pulps it, and slowly sun-dries the parchment to lock in clarity, balance, and sweetness.

Once dried, our Uganda beans are sent to the Nyabirongo factory, where the coffee is hulled, cleaned and graded, then packed into 60 kg sacks with GrainPro liners to protect freshness on its journey to the UK. When the coffee reaches our roastery, it's roasted with precision to highlight its natural fruit notes and clean structure, ensuring each cup reflects both the Rwenzori terroir and the skill of everyone involved, from farm to final roast.
