Jurang Roasters Choice Rwanda Bumbogo Beans 1kg

Bumbogo Washing Station sits in Rwanda's Gakenke District, a region widely recognised for producing some of the country's most exceptional coffees.

The area has become highly competitive among producers and processors, regularly appearing in Cup of Excellence auctions in recent years thanks to its outstanding cup quality and high-altitude growing conditions.

Built in 2017, Bumbogo is the closest washing station to Kigali that we work with. Its location provides efficient access for local farmers while still benefiting from the ideal climate and elevations that make northern Rwanda such a respected coffee-growing region.

Since 2018, the station has more than doubled its processing capacity. Much of this growth is visible across the surrounding hillsides, where an extensive network of raised drying beds now supports careful and consistent coffee processing.

Beyond purchasing and processing cherries, the station works closely with local farming communities to strengthen long-term quality and sustainability. By supporting producers with improved processing standards and agricultural practices, Bumbogo helps farmers increase both the quality of their coffee and the productivity of their land.

Our Work in Rwanda

In Rwanda we partner with Muraho Trading Co., an organisation focused on connecting smallholder coffee producers with quality-driven roasters around the world.

Through this collaboration, affiliated co-operatives receive support to refine their processing methods, improve consistency, and access international specialty markets where their coffees can command a fairer price.

Developing meaningful sourcing relationships in Rwanda takes time. As we continue working together, we gain deeper insight into the challenges faced by local producers — from infrastructure and processing logistics to market access. Our goal is to help build a sourcing model that rewards quality while creating long-term incentives for farmers and washing stations to invest in improving their coffee.

We currently source coffees from several of Muraho’s washing stations across the Nyamasheke, Gakenke, and Nyabihu regions, each known for distinct microclimates and flavour profiles.

In 2026, our roaster Mark travelled to Rwanda to visit producers and washing stations in person, including Bumbogo.

The trip focused on strengthening relationships at origin and helping establish a more transparent Direct Trade approach, allowing us to work more closely with the people responsible for growing and processing these exceptional coffees.

Bumbogo Washing Station

Bumbogo Washing Station is located in Gakenke District, an area widely recognised for producing some of Rwanda’s most celebrated coffees.

The region has become highly competitive among producers and processors, with several Cup of Excellence–winning lots originating here in recent years.

Built in 2017, Bumbogo is the washing station closest to Kigali that we currently work with. Since 2018 the station has expanded significantly, more than doubling its processing capacity. This growth is visible across the surrounding hillsides, where a large network of raised drying beds now supports careful and consistent coffee drying.

Beyond simply purchasing coffee cherries, Bumbogo also works closely with the surrounding farming community. By supporting producers with improved agricultural practices and processing standards, the station helps farmers increase both the quality of their coffee and the long-term productivity of their land. These collaborative efforts ultimately benefit producers, processors, and roasters alike while contributing to the continued growth of Rwanda’s specialty coffee sector.

Washed Process

At Bumbogo, washed coffees are processed with careful attention to quality and consistency.

Freshly harvested cherries are hand-sorted to remove underripe or damaged fruit before entering flotation tanks, where lower-density cherries and debris are separated.

The selected cherries are then pulped and fermented in concrete tanks for around 12 hours. During fermentation, the parchment coffee is periodically agitated to ensure even mucilage breakdown.

After fermentation, the coffee passes through a serpentine washing channel, where water flow and movement separate beans by density while removing any remaining mucilage. The parchment is then given a final rinse and moved to drying.

Before drying, workers hand-sort the parchment again to remove defects. The coffee is then dried on raised beds for approximately 30 days, turned regularly to ensure slow, even drying and stable quality.

Natural Process

For natural processed coffees, ripe cherries are hand-sorted and floated to remove defective fruit before drying.

The selected cherries are spread evenly across raised drying beds, allowing airflow while protecting the coffee from ground moisture and pests.

Over the course of around 30 days, the cherries dry slowly in the sun.

During drying, the coffee is regularly turned during the day and covered at night to maintain consistent moisture levels. Once fully dried, the outer fruit is removed during milling, leaving the green coffee beans ready for grading and export.

Natural processing often produces coffees with greater sweetness, fuller body, and more pronounced fruit flavours.
