Jurang Roasters Choice Tanzania Ngorongoro Beans 1kg

Ngila Estate sits on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater in northern Tanzania, perched at the edge of the cloud forest at 1,600 metres above sea level.

The estate borders a 50-hectare forest corridor that allows local wildlife — including elephants — to roam freely along ancient migration paths and mineral-rich caves, making Ngila as much a conservation story as a coffee one.

Originally established by a German settler in the early 20th century, the estate was revitalised in 1992 when it was purchased by Rudolf Meyer with just 30 hectares of neglected coffee trees. Today, under the stewardship of Vera Stücker, Ngila has grown into a 100-hectare estate with around 150,000 coffee trees, consistently producing specialty-grade coffee that meets the standards of premium markets worldwide.

Every cherry is hand-picked and processed through a washed method — fermented for 12 hours before being carefully sun-dried on raised African drying beds for 8 to 13 days. No mechanical dryers are used, allowing the natural flavours of the bean to be fully preserved.

Ngila is Rainforest Alliance Certified and plants 4,000–5,000 indigenous trees annually to combat erosion and support reforestation. The estate also runs a long-standing partnership with the nearby Sumawe primary school, funding solar panels, water infrastructure, books, and desks for the local community.

Farming with Purpose: Production & Sustainability at Ngila Estate

Ngila grows a diverse range of Arabica varieties across 100 hectares, with its dedicated Glenmalure section focused entirely on specialty coffee.

All cherries are hand-picked, washed, and sun-dried on raised beds using water-efficient equipment — no mechanical dryers, just time and care. The estate consistently scores above 84.5 on the specialty grading scale.

Environmental responsibility runs through everything Ngila does. Rainforest Alliance Certified, the estate maintains a wildlife corridor adjoining the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, plants up to 5,000 indigenous trees every year, and has introduced biochar production to improve long-term soil health.

Water management is equally prioritised, with reforested land along the Ngila River protecting the local ecosystem alongside a plot-leasing programme that brings neighbouring farmers into sustainable land practices.

Rooted in Community

Ngila Estate's 100 permanent employees — many of whom have been with the estate for over 30 years — earn above the government minimum wage and receive healthcare support, retirement contributions, and education assistance.

During harvest season, that workforce swells to over 250, providing a meaningful boost to the local economy. The estate also trains surrounding smallholder farmers in safe, organic farming practices.

Washed Process

For washed coffees, ripe cherries are hand-sorted and floated to remove any defective fruit before processing begins.

The selected cherries are pulped to remove the outer skin, then left to ferment in water for 12 hours. This fermentation stage breaks down the remaining fruit mucilage and helps develop the coffee's clean, defined character.

After fermentation, the beans are thoroughly washed before being spread across raised African drying beds, where they sun-dry slowly over 8 to 13 days. During drying, the coffee is regularly turned to ensure even moisture loss, and covered at night to protect against humidity.

No mechanical dryers are used at any stage. Washed processing typically produces coffees with greater clarity, brighter acidity, and a cleaner cup that allows the origin character of the bean to shine through.
